In L A Y E R Fern Long and Mary Babineau have built a series of constructions to bring the industrial landscape into the gallery. Made from pallets, cardboard, house paint, plastic and other salvaged materials they pull apart and then reimagine the many layers of a working city. Almost everything within this immersive installation was found - often discarded after minimal use. Through a process of drawing, painting, cutting and binding these cast-offs are transformed - a push and pull between the work as an object and as an act. Long and Babineau use an experimental approach to respond to the stratum of architecture, roadways, powerlines, glass and metal - spaces we are immersed in daily. The raw materials’ themselves, the stories bound up in their use and the process of reinventing them are a contemplation on the abundance and destruction running parallel through our fast moving and disposable culture.

Mary Babineau and Fern Long are Victoria based artists who met as students at the Vancouver Island School of Art and are members of BOXCARSIX Artist Collective. They share a maniacal passion for drawing, painting and creating assemblage pieces that explore the intersection of urban/industrial landscape, architecture and personal space. The seemingly overlooked and mundane aspects of these places inspire Babineau and Long to build entirely impossible structures.

the fifty fifty arts collective is comprised of individuals living and working on unceded and occupied First Nations Territories, specifically the lands of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, as well as the W̱SÁNEĆ, Sc'ianew and T'Souke First Nations.

The programming space itself is situated on Songhees and Esquimalt Territory but engages with individuals and communities across Turtle Island.

As a collective we endeavour to deepen our own understandings of how we are implicated in the history and in the present ongoing project of settler colonialism. As members of the fifty fifty arts collective we continually responsibilize ourselves to the complex kind of space that is the fifty fifty which hosts and facilitates the dissemination of the ideas and work of others.
